At the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, there is a small rural town where locals have long made their living by farming tobacco. Seven-year-old Vera (Vera Centenera) lives in the big city but adores spending the holidays in her grandparents’ town and particularly in their deserted tobacco barn. This is where she first meets Nieves.
In contrast, Nieves (Ada Mar Lupiáñez), a teenager from the town who works on the family’s farm all day, can’t help but feel caged and longs for a much different life.
The two girls, each driven by their sense of adventure discover a magical creature at the tobacco barns that has the power to change their reality.
Nieves’ story is the most relatable one yet her transformation is much delayed. The true star is the creature, created by Oscar winners DDT who were alsk behind the makeup and effects in Pan’s Labyrinth and A Monster Calls.
Tobacco Barns makes its Australian premiere at the Spanish Film Festival and is now showing at participating Palace cinemas. Check your local guides for screening times.
