Three Thousand Years of Longing is about a genie (Idis Elba) and his master, a single academic Dr Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton).
While travelling, Dr Binnie selects a glass bottle. Back at her hotel room, out pops a genie to grant her three wishes. But there are rules to be followed!
The genie loves to tell a tale and he has a captive audience. Slowly the two get to know each other and unravel their life stories. The genie recounts some of his previous masters and what not to wish for.
Through his eyes, we travel through different countries, cultures and times. The variety of characters and unique settings is one of the film’s strengths, but sometimes the narration gets too much.
Three Thousand Years of Longing is an offbeat journey led by a centuries-old genie. Ah, but what would your three wishes be?
Three Thousand Years of Longing has an Australian release date of 1 September 2022.
About Three Thousand Years of Longing
Dr Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is an academic – content with life and a creature of reason. While in Istanbul attending a conference, she happens to encounter a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom.
This presents two problems. First, she doubts that he is real and second, because she is a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The Djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually, she is beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both.
