The Curious Case of Dolphin Bay opens this week and is perfect to occupy the kids for a couple of hours these school holidays.
Fifteen-year-old Quinn Perkins is introduced to us as she departs for a summer internship in Australia. There she’ll be reunited with her best friend Daniela and marine biologist father Charlie. The besties haven’t seen each other since Charlie inherited a research centre in Dolphin Bay, studying the unnatural shift in the local reef’s biodiversity. Things feel different between Quinn and Daniela. Feeling she’s been replaced by another, Quinn distracts herself with fellow intern Teddy, an adventurer wannabe on a treasure hunt that will unlock a number of mysterious events.
It’s a beautifully shot and colour-rich film we’ve come to know from the Steve Jaggi stable. Locations used might be familiar to some, including the Gold Coast and its hinterland to the western suburbs of Brisbane. Some of the dialogue is awkward, but the story is not taxing and the young cast give authentic performances.
The Curious Case of Dolphin Bay opens nationally from Thursday 22 September. Check your local guides for screening times and venues.
