Ennio – The Maestro – showcases the life and career of legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone.
You’ll hear from Ennio aged 91 in an interview with Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore (recorded just before his death in 2020).
The documentary traces his influences from his father who played the trumpet to his days at school learning his art. His career started with TV commercials and pop music.
The second half of the film is where you’ll start to recognize some of the music. Ennio created iconic work for Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns and Dario Argento’s Giallo films. Then he moved to Hollywood and worked with Oliver Stone, Clint Eastwood and Quentin Tarantino, and more.
It’s hard to believe that he wrote over 500 soundtracks!
The film shows how he grew creatively and how his style changed over time. He was met with critics from the established profession, as he developed some innovative techniques and tried new sounds. He had doubts, but always wrote music that met his standards and was authentically his own.
You might not know his name now, but you’ll enjoy listening to his music and reminiscing.
Ennio – The Maestro is a must-watch for film and music fans.
