For romance lovers, be sure to see festival favourite Breaking up in Rome at this years’ Italian Film Festival at Palace cinemas.
The title gives the story away but don’t be fooled into expecting a formulaic take on the subject. Star and director Edoardo Leo has crafted a mature and sophisticated comedic turn that examines the complexities in two separate relationships.
Taking centre stage is Zoe (played by Marta Nieto) and Tommaso (Leo) who have been together for ten years. Communication between the pair is at a critical low. Zoe is considering ending things and asks the author of an ‘Agony Aunt’ column – for advice. She finds herself opening up to the insightful stranger and soon she is distracted by him. Tom learns of Zoe’s crisis through false pretenses, and what he learns secondhand surprises him. If he changed, would it fix everything?
Both performers fill out their character’s shoes well in this commentary on love in the digital age. Tom can be a little morose, and both are painfully polite to each other, but sparks fly in the second half.
Breaking Up in Rome screens from next Thursday at Roman Romance night of the Italian Film Festival. Check your local guides for screening and venue information.
