The Bookshop Cat, written and illustrated by Cindy Wume, is an exuberantly illustrated picture book for young children about a cat that loves reading.
Unlike the rest of his family, the black cat wants to do nothing else but read.
To this end, he eventually finds his dream job at a Children’s Bookshop working with a girl named Violet, whose Grandfather owns the shop. Purring with happiness, he helps children that visit the shop pick out one of his favourite books.
Unfortunately, one day the bookshop meets with disaster and is flooded!
Sadly, the children no longer visit.
The Bookshop Cat is so unhappy that his family offer to help. Violet comes up with a plan and they all work hard to get the books back to the children who, in turn, bring his beloved bookshop back to life.
This gloriously illustrated book will appeal to pre-readers and young readers from five to seven years.
The illustrations alone are a joy as there is so much to discover, and they tell the story beautifully. The well-written text makes wonderful reading too, adding another dimension for older children.
Review from Seven year old: “I liked the black cat because it’s like me and loves books. I like when the black cat got a job.”
A wonderful gift for any young child. Highly recommended and a must for the school library.
