What’s Love Got to Do with It is a cross-cultural film about the tradition of arranged (assisted) marriages.
Zoe grew up with the next neighbours Kaz and his Pakistan family. When Kaz tells her his parents are going to help find a bride from their home country, she decides this could make a good documentary.
She pitches the idea and it’s accepted. So, she follows Kaz around filming his intimate moments with his family and getting to know the new bright and beautiful bride-to-be. The marriage goes ahead but not everyone’s hearts are in it.
The film gives a surprising and sympathetic view of the tradition of arranged marriages (whether it’s your cup of chai or not).
Fun Fact: Modern Asian young women are increasingly working with their parents to choose husbands. They are opting for the hybridization of customary Western and Indian practices.
What’s Love Got to Do with It is a heart-warming romantic comedy about finding who is the right person to marry.
About What’s Love Got to Do with It
How do you find lasting love in today’s world? For documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbour Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love.
