Take the heart of Crouching Tiger and fight choreography of John Wick and that should give you a picture of Weekend in Taipei.
Taipei is an imposing and monochromatic backdrop and so an audience won’t be hard pressed to find this film less than visually appealing. Throw in some cracking fight sequences and fast cars and the film is surprisingly over before you know it.
John Lawler (Luke Evans) is a crack DEA agent married to his job – there’s not a bad guy he can’t stop, nothing he won’t sacrifice to close out a case. Forced into taking time out after a collateral-damaged siege, Lawler finds himself back in Taipei and face to face with ex-love and ex-nemesis Joey Kang (Gwen Lun-Mei).
The two of them weren’t supposed to fall in love, but fate brought them together… before forces of crime and corruption tore them apart. And now 15 years later, she has another surprise in store for him.
Weekend in Taipei opens nationally today. Check your local guides for screening times.
