The Violin Player as the title suggests is all about playing the violin professionally. Karin (Matleena Kuusniemi), an internationally acclaimed concert violinist career is cut short after a car accident where her playing hand is damaged.
This incident is the start of a mid-life crisis and a change of career to teaching. Suddenly, she falls for a gifted student, Antti (Olavi Uusivirta).
To add into the confusing mix, the conductor (Kim Bodnia) is Karin’s ex-lover. His character is the most interesting of the three. But I found it hard to warm to the two main characters, so I didn’t become invested in the storyline.
Karin refuses to leave her family leaving Antti hurt and angry. His emotions overboil into his practice performance, resulting in the possibility of him missing out in the lead role. Their affair quickly turns ugly as Antti starts to act like a spoilt teenager.
Naturally, the musical score is the standout of this film – If you love classical music, then you’ll probably enjoy this one.
Violin Player is a must-see for music aficionados.
