Fly Me To The Moon is a romance drama based on events leading up to NASA’s historic Apollo 11 moon landing.
The film firmly centres around two characters Kelly Jones, head of public relations (Scarlett Johansson) and Cole Davis, launch director (Channing Tatum).
Set during the first half of 1969 the pair meet at a café but he’s emotionally not ready to date. So, when Kelly starts work at NASA to promote the president’s space mission, Cole is surprised and the two don’t see eye to eye.
When Kelly is asked to film a fake moon landing, things start to get intriguing. But she has to hide it from the rest of the team, who are focused on the real mission.
The comedy scenes aren’t laugh-out-loud ones, it’s more about clever sharp-witted dialogue. The pair are charming together, but the relationship develops with a slow sizzle punctuated by some prudish moments.
The 1960s set and vibe are authentic, except for the modern mechanical keyboard in the launch scenes. For some reason, it sticks out, but perhaps that’s showing my nerd card.
The film was originally set to be released directly on streaming but showed promise for a box office release. I think the film could have been shorter and tighter.
Fly Me to The Moon is an easy breezy watch for anyone who likes their rom-coms simple but not too spicy. It’s a good date-night movie.
Australian film release date 11 July 2024.
