For the majority of us, the desire to chase a dream is a simple choice. To organise a trip to the other side of the world is just a phone call away. But for some, these everyday tasks are an insurmountable mountain to climb. Nothing highlights this challenge more tragically, or fervently than, IO Capitano.
IO Capitano is the story of two teenagers, Seydou and Moussa, who ache to leave Dakar, Senegal and make their way to Europe. They do this secretly, while repeatedly being warned about the arduous journey. The dream of becoming rich and famous as a musician in Europe is too enticing. Those warnings will ring in their ears as they are quickly confronted with the horrors and obstacles of the Sahara, detention centres in Libya and the perils of the open sea.
Director Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah) has crafted a suspenseful contemporary odyssey, offering a perspective far removed from the images we are used to seeing in the Western media. At its heart is a captivating performance from newcomer Seydou Sarr.
It’s a visually stunning film, poetic and the emotions are palpable. This is an important film which understandably was nominated for Best International Feature Film at this year’s Academy and Golden Globe Awards.
IO Capitano is showing now. Check your local guides for screening times.
