We chatted with Emily and Chris Boult from Premium Pilates and Fitness about opening their second studio:
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
Em: Pilates has been a major part of my fitness regime since I was 10 years old (over 22 years ago!), due to injuries whilst swimming competitively. In my early 20’s I wasn’t getting the results I wanted from going to the gym and doing weights and cardio. I was working as a law clerk and studying law and realised that I didn’t want to have a sedentary job my whole life. When I thought about what I really loved, Pilates came up! I attended a few courses mainly to achieve better results for my body, but I ended up with a whole new career (and a much leaner, more defined body and happier mind!). I quit law and have never looked back! After giving birth to my first baby in 2018, I found an even deeper love and appreciation for Pilates.
Chris: I have always had a passion for sport and fitness. Growing up I loved playing Cricket and Rugby, sparking the flame to other interests later on in my life. I started doing Pilates at the gym during my rehab phase after knee surgery and I loved it! Once Emily had told me about her training and how much she loved doing what she was doing, I felt like I had to get on board. Almost eight years into our wonderful passion project and I think I enjoy it more now than I did initially (which was a lot!). I am definitely more knowledgeable than I was when we first started, having done further studies to get my Certificate III and IV in Fitness and my Diploma in Nutrition. I love food to which most of our clients will attest to.
Tell us about Premium Pilates and Fitness:
Chris and I opened PPF in September 2012, after noticing a gap in the market for smaller, more intimate Pilates classes. Over the years we have been able to add more fitness classes to the timetable, to become a one stop shop for all our clients!
What sort of fitness classes do you hold?
We offer Barre, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Yoga, Stretch, Pilates Matwork and Pilates on the Reformer. We also started offering Pilates Interval Training or PIT, which is Chris’s invention.
Tell us about the new fitness class you have developed?
Pilates Interval Training or “PIT” came to me during the COVID lockdown. I was struggling for ideas for a Matwork class to film and figured that choosing a few exercises to perfect over the class with a timer would work well and give our clients something a bit different. Evidently, it seems to have worked! Clients responded well straight away and our classes are very popular in the studio. The idea is simple; 8 or 9 exercises for 1 minute each exercise, 15 seconds to rest and demonstrate in between, then a 45 second rest at the end of the round. You should get through 4 rounds and feel quite worked by the end.
How do I sign up to one of your online classes?
To sign up for our online classes is very simple. Just head to our website, premiumpilates.com.au, hover your cursor over the “Online Workouts” tab in the main menu and wait for the dropdown menu, click on “Register for Online Home Workouts” and follow the prompts from there.
How long have you been in the fitness industry?
We have been instructors in the fitness industry for 8 and a half years.
What inspired your passion for health and fitness?
Chris & Em: we are addicted to how much health and fitness has improved our lives and want to share this with everyone. We know firsthand how wonderful you can feel when you are healthy and strong. We think health and fitness should be a major part of everyones life.
What is your best tip when it comes to training?
Chris: Get enough sleep, stay hydrated, and fuel yourself sufficiently.
Em: prioritise your workouts and yourself. There is time to do 30 minutes to 1 hour of exercise everyday, if you really want to. You just may need to give something up; but I guarantee it won’t be as good for you as exercise!
What is your personal fitness routine?
Em: I walk every day, I do reformer pilates once a week, barre once a week, HIIT twice a week and mat pilates twice times a week. I find I am a much better person to live with when I exercise; it is so important to my mental health.
Chris: I do cardio once a day; running or riding a stationary bike. I also do resistance training once a day or every two days; Pilates or weights. I also am getting back into jiu jitsu a couple times a week.
If you could do one type of exercise, what would it be?
Em: Matwork Pilates! All the way. It’s how I first learnt Pilates years ago and it will always hold a special part in my heart. The best thing.
Chris: resistance training, meaning Pilates and weights.
Do you have any plans for the future?
Em & Chris: we just hope to grow the Premium Pilates and Fitness community and to help more people get fit, get healthy and discover the wonders of exercise!
