Dovetail on Overend is named in part by the street corner it is located on in Norman Park. The café used to be an old corner store and is a popular spot with locals.
The café is run by Adam Thomson and his wife Rejoice. Adam was inspired to open a café after becoming a prolific café reviewer on Beanhunter. Rejoice bakes most of the in-house treats, with the majority of them gluten-free. The best thing is they don’t charge extra for gluten-free – yeah!
The coffee is brewed using Uncle Joe’s beans on a sleek San Remo Cafe Racer machine. The house blend (for white coffee) was developed as a collaboration between the owners and Almanac Coffee Roasters. For black coffee, Dovetail offer more fruity blends and single origins roasted by Uncle Joe’s Coffee and other select local and Australian roasters.
There is a range of dairy free alternatives including Macadamia Milk crafted in Byron Bay. It has been a massive hit and is perfectly matched with their freshly brewed Chai, which is also incredibly popular. (I’m going to try that next time I visit.)
They also serve speciality tea from Cartel Tea and a custom blend of Mork Speciality Hot Chocolate. I was tempted by the Nutella chocolate milkshake (there is also Oreo, Maltesers or Crunchie bar versions).
Dovetail serves breakfast and lunch. I thoroughly enjoyed my Rueben sandwich. My companions enjoyed their baked eggs # 7 which is two free range eggs, house beef chili con carne with toasted sourdough.
The breakie rice Buddha bowl has become a firm favourite and will now be a staple on the menu. It’s a big bowl filled with brown rice, sautéed onion, garlic, capsicum, tomato, mild chilli, pine nuts, kale, dill, pomegranate seeds with avocado and roasted pumpkin. You can add an optional side of halloumi, Bangalow ham or baked egg.
The signature breakfast is for those with a large appetite – the tasting plate is an epic vegetarian big breakfast with caponata siciliana and avocado with sourdough, halloumi and two eggs sunny side up. Other breakfast options include macadamia muesli and Bangalow babe.
The seating is outside on the pavement either at tables or benches giving the café a relaxed vibe.
Takeaway available. Family and dog-friendly.
Open Tuesday to Sunday.
Highly recommended.
