Who doesn’t love going to the movies? It’s definitely been a major disappointment over the past year or so not being able to sit down with your large popcorn and enjoy a brand new release. Luckily enough, the wait is almost over. As fans anticipate the return of movie theatres, you may need reminding of some of the biggest film franchises around. Although some of these franchises look unlikely to continue, many are still making installments to their series.
James Bond
James Bond is one of the longest-running film franchises. Following its first release in 1963, the franchise has attracted a huge number of fans. With a current total of 24 films, the series has grossed almost $7 million. The iconic role has been played by seven actors in total. The current James Bond, Daniel Craig, will step down from the role following the release of No Time to Die later this year. A new actor will be cast, who will travel to various locations as the infamous spy.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is the highest-grossing film franchise of all time. A staggering 23 movies over the span of just 12 years have seen it gross over $22.5 billion. This includes the highest-grossing film of all time, Avengers: Endgame. The MCU is showing no signs of slowing down too, with dozens of shows and films already announced from the franchise.
Star Wars
Since its introduction in 1977, Star Wars has developed a loyal fan base thanks to the epic saga. Twelve films in the franchise have seen it make $10 billion in the box office. It’s also been boosted by streaming service Disney+, which has furthered the series with TV shows such as The Mandalorian. The franchise is also expecting a new instalment in 2023, called Rogue Squadron.
Harry Potter
The wonderful world of wizards has caused this franchise to grow massively since its first release in 2001. With eight Harry Potter films, followed by the Fantastic Beasts series, the films have grossed over $9 billion. The franchise looks set to grow more, with three more Fantastic Beasts installments expected in the future.
X-Men
Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, and James McAvoy, are just some of the stars who have been involved in the hugely successful franchise. 13 films have been released in the past 21 years, grossing over $6 billion. The future of the X-Men isn’t exactly clear, although it does appear as if both the X-Men and Fantastic Four will begin to be featured in the MCU.
Middle Earth
The writings of J.R.R Tolkien were brought to life by Peter Jackson in the early 2000s. The film series set in Middle Earth comprises the trilogies of both The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit. The six films grossed a total of $5.8 billion. With the last movie coming in 2014 (The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies), it was unclear what was next for the franchise. It does now appear that Amazon will be making a TV series for Prime Video set in Middle Earth.
