Anyone lucky to have visited Palm Cove will recognise the local sights in new romantic comedy This Little Love of Mine. While referred to as Sapphire Cove, the island becomes a romantic getaway disguised as work for the San Francisco based lead character.
The story begins with meeting Laura (played by Saskia Hampele, The Heights) who is on the verge of making partner at her law firm. The promotion is the apple in her and fiance Owen’s (played by Craig Horner) eyes. Laura will however face one more hurdle before she’s a serious contender.
Arriving in her office is Graham Finley (played by Martin Portus) a top US billionaire who announces he’s stepping down as CEO on his 85th birthday. He wants Laura to handle the transition of the company to his grandson, Chip (played by Liam McIntyre), whose signature is required on the contract before the day of the birthday celebrations. Sounds relatively simple, as Chip and Laura grew up together in Sapphire Cove where Chip still resides. When Chip signs and brings the Finley Corporation into the law firm, the role of partner is pretty much Laura’s. Graham assures Laura it’s a cinch and he and her boss Fiona (played by Monette Lee) send her off on the next flight.
While Chip has remained the same playful self, Laura is now the stereotypical big city high flyer. She’s neither dressed for the laidback island life nor interested in communing with the natural delights on offer at the resort. Furthermore, Chip has no interest in taking over his grandfather’s business, let alone even reading the contract. So they make a deal; Chip reads one page of the contract for each adventure Laura partakes in at the resort.
The stage is set for the pair to reacquaint themselves, and for Laura to realise what is really important to her.
There’s great supporting characters in Gem, Laura’s childhood friend played by Lynn Gilmartin (How Do You Know Chris?) also eyeing off the promotion to General Manager, and Karavi, the resort’s assistant (played by Lawrence Ola) providing quite a few light moments.
Following its world premiere at the Gold Coast Film Festival, This Little Love of Mine is screening now at Event cinemas. Check your local guides for screening times. The distributor Athabasca Pictures is donating 100% of net profits to Cancer Council Australia, so a great reason to show your support.
