Single Asian Female is a homegrown comedy written by Michelle Law with three strong female lead characters.
The play is set in a suburban Sunshine Coast Chinese restaurant about a family comes to terms with living in Australia, men and money.
Pearl (Hsiao-Ling Tang) is the Tiger Mum who is trying her best to balance running a business with raising her two young daughters. They are embarrassed by their mother’s outdated traditions which clash with their friend’s influence.
Michelle Law returns to the stage playing the elder daughter, Zoe Wong, who has to make a decision about her career and life, after starting up a relationship with her gorgeous new boyfriend.
The story has themes of overcoming generational gaps and cultural differences which results in relatable dialogue.
The soundtrack to the play is upbeat – and the crowd were singing along and clapping to the beat. The audience roared with laughter in places and the play has a great feel-good vibe.
Highly recommended.
