Soma Cacao is an online shop that stocks ceremonial cacao based in the tropical Cassowary Coast of Queensland.
The Mayans called cacao ‘the food of the gods’. It contains theobromine a gentle but long-lasting stimulant that will give you a boost without any crash later
Did you know Cacao is one of the highest plant-based sources of iron and magnesium? It is also rich in antioxidants and supports the production of serotonin, dopamine and anandamide (the bliss molecule).
I tried the Ceremonial Cacao sample pack which included three different single-origin cacaos from:
- Karkar Island Ceremonial Cacao from Papua New Guinea
- Australian Ceremonial Cacao from Far North Queensland
- Balinese Ceremonial Cacao from Bali, Indonesia
All three were cacao paste not powder, so you roughly measure 1 tablespoon and add to some oat milk and water on the stovetop. Heat the cacao gently but do not boil. You can then whisk it. I like to add a teaspoon of honey to mine, but I can drink it without a sweetener.
The cacao is handpicked, fermented, sun-dried and then roasted to form a solid paste. You can use it in smoothies, baking or raw treats.
These Soma Cacao products are a great way to try Ceremonial Cacao. All of them were delicious and preparing them on the stovetop made the drink feel a little special.

About Soma Cacao
Our Australian cacao is made from beans that have won a cacao-phony of awards at home and abroad. This cacao takes ‘bean to bar’ one step further: this is ‘tree to bar’ cacao – grown and ground in tropical North Queensland.
We’ve also sourced Mexican ceremonial cacao – honouring the motherland of our beloved beverage. And we don’t just fair trade. We direct trade – so no middlemen, no supply chains. We have a personal relationship with our grower, Josue, whose family has harvested these Criolla-bean cacao trees for generations, and whom we pay well above the fair-trade rate.
The way we source cacao means we do not have unlimited access to supplies. So, we’ve recently added two new varieties to the mix, both of which keep our food miles down. Deep in the jungles of a remote, tropical, volcanic island off the coast of Papua New Guinea grows some of the most highly prized cacao in the world – our Karkar Island ceremonial cacao.
And finally, we’ve sourced raw, certified organic cacao from a farmer’s collective in Bali: arguably one of the most spiritual places on earth. From the planting of the seeds all the way to harvesting, the Balinese cacao farmers offer daily prayers, offerings and ceremonies at each stage of the process.
