Mortal Kombat is inspired by the blockbuster video game franchise, but you won’t need to have played the game to understand the storyline.
Here we follow MMA fighter Cole Young as he hunts down Outworld’s people. Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, to defeat him. Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major (who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with).
The film follows his journey to the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm. He grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Cole starts training with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano. Can he defeat his enemies of Outworld and stop them once and for all?
The diverse international cast reflects the global nature of the brand, with talent spanning the worlds of film, television and martial arts.
The Mortal Kombat film is based on a story by Oren Uziel called ‘Mortal Kombat: Rebirth’ and the videogame created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Did you know Mortal Kombat 11 is the most successful video game launch in its history?
Mortal Kombat was a delight to see in cinemas. It’s got gore, Jackie Chan style martial arts, epic fighting scenes and unexpected laughs.
*I’m docking one star for my favourite character getting killed off.
The film is set for an Australian release date nationwide on 22 April 2021. It will be available in the U.S.A on HBO Max for 31 days from the theatrical release.
