Mistletoe Ranch, the latest in a string of light rom coms, arrives in time to get your feel-good Christmas vibes on. Yet again, southeast Queensland gets transformed, this time into a snowy-mountain substitute for Montana. It’s clearly produced for an American market with the Aussie and New Zealand acting ensemble speaking with US accents.
The story has all the hallmarks of the genre: big-city photographer Aimee (played by Mercy Cornwall) with small town roots is more interested in preparing for a big shoot than returning home for the holidays. That is until ex-fiancé James (played by Jordi Webber) plays grinch. Throw in a dilemma to make Aimee question where she truly belongs, and the stage is set for a reunion that you know will reignite old flames in a glistening white and holly-red backdrop. It’s a comfort movie that doesn’t ask too much.
Musically speaking, you’ll find the seasonal favourites but notes from the soundtrack and a duet between the two leads I found quite good.
You should recognise a number of faces from both current and past Australian and US television shows, including Charles Allen (Bloody Hell), Molly Wright (Kidnapped), Andrea Moor (Heartbreak High) and Kimberley Joseph (Lost).
Mistletoe Ranch opens nationally today. Check your local guides for screening times and locations.
