Lorelei was my first opera experience, so I was a little unsure of what to expect.
Up on stage were opera superstars Ali McGregor, Antionette Halloran and Dimity Shepherd. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they were singing in English. There was also an autocue underneath the stage, which even featured emojis!
The performance was a modern interpretation of the myth of these siren singers from the River Rhine in Germany. The beautiful and bewitching female Lore Lay was accused of luring men and causing their death by crashing into the dangerous rocks.
The story explored what it means to be a woman under a patriarchal society, with a cheeky and fun twist. The music was upbeat and a refreshing mix of tango, pop and Latin-inspired original score.
