Bad Boys returns with Marcus (Martin Lawrence) and (Will Smith) as Miami’s rogue cops hunting down the criminals.
If the opening credits feel familiar, it might be because you have seen them in one of the trailers.
The film starts in bromance territory. After we meet the family and attend a wedding, Marcus lands in hospital. He has a near-death experience and believes he is invincible. I didn’t enjoy this story arc and could have easily cut 20 minutes out of this part of the film.
The first half of the film is ho-hum. The past lives, standing on a ledge at the top of a building and random road-crossing scenes didn’t work for me. The cheesy humour doesn’t land. What is happening with the military helicopter scene? It’s smashed together in a hazardous fashion and beyond unbelievable. All of these scenes missed the mark.
The repeated in-your-face product placement is off-putting.
Other people were laughing loudly in the cinema, but these jokes didn’t land for me.
Suddenly at around the one-hour mark, the film picks up the pace and the plot gets interesting. I’m engaged in the storyline. We hear the familiar title track song and Bad Boys is better.
The slapping scene doesn’t work for me (as a nod to that impulsive slap at the Oscars by Will Smith). The alligator scenes are predictable.
Why is the daughter playing a helpless victim? Couldn’t she at least kick him in the balls or swing some punches around? No, a man has to save her. The damsel in distress moment is super lame.
As the fourth film in the franchise, with some relief, this might be the last.
If you’re a fan of the Bad Boys series, you’ll probably like this one too. Lots of people in the cinema were laughing, perhaps it’s just not my cup of Skittles.
