We chatted with owner and winemaker, David Morgan from The Overflow Estate 1895.
Tell us a little bit about The Overflow Estate 1895
We’re a boutique winery located in Beaudesert, near Brisbane and the Gold Coast. We have a vineyard, cellar door, gourmet cafe and function space. You can read more about us on the website: www.theoverflowestate1895.com.au
What motivated you to go into winemaking?
It was a folly, a hobby, a bloody error! Vastly more difficult than I’d appreciated. Thousands of hours later, many recriminations, a plethora of obstructive public servants .. and finally, we are there!!
Do you miss being a surgeon?
Not even a scintilla of regret having retired. Mind you, the synergies are extraordinary: 1. There is a lot of chemistry in Medicine, and I did a Science Degree in Biochemistry. Similarly. heaps of chemistry in viticulture. 2. As an Orthopaedic Surgeon, I was heavily dependent upon Teams. I still am, with teams running the cattle, the sand mining, the quarry, the vineyard, the Cellar Door and the Restaurant. 3. Orthopaedic Surgeons use a lot of tools( hammers, saws, drills etc). I do a lot with tools in the farm workshop too. 4. Finally, there is Social Intercourse. I simply LOVED my patients and eagerly participated in all sorts of conversations. That has continued in the Cellar Door and the Tasting Room with guests from far and wide. In fact, it’s been a natural transition for me.
What’s your most popular product?
Our National Gold Medal winning Vermentino. Mind you, the Fiano, the Rose’, the Montepulciano, the Tempranillo, the Sparkling Red and the Sparkling White are also keenly sought.
What’s unique about your wine?
All from our marvellous Estate, hand tended, hand-picked and hand made. I know every vine by name and polish every berry’s bum every morning.
What’s your favourite wine right now? Why?
The Tempranillo. It has an earthiness reminiscent of hunting truffles under the oak trees with your dog, and a green peppercorn finish. Brilliant with a pepperoni pizza, in bed, on a Friday night.
If you could only have one wine for the rest of your life, what is it?
Our Montepulciano is like a religious experience. Lustrous plum colour and filled with luscious Black Forest berries, cherries and mulberries. To die for.
What’s your favourite food to pair with wine?
A rack of lamb, dusted with mustard, and roasted with spring vegetables. … OR .. a rich cherry-liquor pudding, drizzled with hot molten chocolate, and surrounded by a moat of vanilla-bean ice cream.
What’s on the menu at the gourmet café?
Fresh barramundi grilled over an open wild ironbark fire, aged, slow cooked beef cheeks, seared scallops wrapped in finely sliced jamon, lemon infused lobster thermidor etc
Who would like to have a wine with?
Kath Rose please.
Where does 1895 in your name come from?
It’s when the first generation Joyce family arrived at The Overflow. You can read more about the history on our website.
What makes the location popular for events and weddings?
Perfectly manicured island in the magnificent Lake Wyaralong with wildlife, natural bush setting, historic homestead and a multi-award winning architecturally stunning cellar door and restaurant. We are also about to commission 5 luxury bush cabins.
Where do recommend I go when I’m next in the Scenic Rim?
Everywhere is marvellous.
What events are you hosting as part of Eat Local Week?
An Italian Harvest Feast and a LONG Degustation Lunch.
Do you have plans for the future? If so, what are they?
The 5 luxury cabins will be set in the forests, with lake, mountain and island views and surrounded by natural flora and fauna. Search for Wander at The Overflow. You owe it to yourself.
How can people contact you?
The website is user friendly and has links for email, reservations, general enquiries etc. The phone number is special .. 04 55 22 1895!!
