All good Aussie girls like to see their man dressed up in a suit for a special occasion.
The best way to work out what suit to wear is to just dress in a style inspired by your girlfriend’s (or wife’s) favourite actor. And, if you are currently single…. feel free to use your imagination here.
The first step is to decide whether you want to look old-school traditional or to go for a more modern look. Personally, I think it is astute to buy basics, and then add lots of patterns.
Suits inspired fashion
Suits, suits and more suits. Just don’t forget the apple pie (from Wandering Cooks, of course!!!!) Okay, so I must admit I don’t get any of the legal jargon in the TV series. But I’m hooked on the storyline. It’s packed with all of your typical office stereotypes dressed to the tee in corporate wear.
Extra points for matching your accessories to your date or partner’s outfit.
Tom Ford Films inspired fashion
I’m so glad Tom Ford has continued his writing and film directing. ‘Widows’ is currently showing in cinemas, but for menswear inspiration, you might like to watch his previous films ‘Nocturnal Animals’ and ‘A Single Man’.
If you don’t own a suit a black one is always a good option. (Or brown depending on your hair colour and skin tone). Pair this with a white shirt and the world is your clothing oyster. Think a solid black tie and then upgrade.
A white pocket square is going to be your first choice, but please buy a couple of coloured and patterned ones too.
Mad Men inspired fashion
Mad Men is full of smoking red hot suits. Look for a pocket square in a fun pattern like your favourite animal print, camouflage, flags of your home country, tweed, or plaid.
You might want to match your tie to your belt, and to your shoes. But don’t forget to add your classic watch. All perfectionists, please take heed – it’s totally okay if one or more of these doesn’t match perfectly.
The only exception is an interview or your first wedding, you always need to dress your best then.
Menswear Tips
If your old suit doesn’t fit any more then there are lots of suit making tricks to help with the adjustment. Head to your local tailor for a quick fix.
I’d like to see more men in white Panama hats, classic Akubra hats, or black berets. At the moment, I have a soft spot for the green racing caps from the Brisbane Hatters.
For those wanting a little bit of extra colour pop: go the full monty with red suede shoes and matching laces, or even pink cowboy boots.
If you don’t know the in’s and out’s of dressing well, you can always ask at the shop for some advice.
When true blue Aussie guys all dress better down under…… the rewards are endless.
