On Saturday, July 30th, 2022, Gary Antuanne Russell blocked out Rances Barthelemy at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The violent exchange was supported by the fans voraciously. When asked how he managed to block out Rances, Gary revealed that his late father’s comforting voice guided him.
Despite hearing this from the man himself, you can’t ignore that Gary possesses immense power and boxes with precision. A combination of these played a significant role in his victory that Saturday night. No wonder boxing predictions had given him the lead before the match.
The contender for the 140-pound title stopped Rances in the sixth round to maintain his unbeaten record. Their fight was before the Premier Boxing Championship match between Jose Benavidez Jr and Danny Garcia. This was the main event for the day.
At the beginning of the sixth round, Gary sent Rances an uppercut on the right side that saw him landing on the mat. This decisive punch was the third in Rances’ career. Referee Shada Murdaugh was compelled to stop the match at 50 seconds.
Boxing fans weren’t happy with stopping the match. However, all three judges had already given Gary a lead on the scorecard.
To assert his victory, he revealed how he felt the presence of his father the moment he entered the ring. Gary believed it was natural for his late father to be beside him at that moment to make his record of 16-0 knockouts.
Gary’s Return to the Ring Following His Father’s Death
Russell Sr was always at Gary’s corner during every match throughout his boxing career. This was the first match after his death towards the end of May, when Gary Jr, the eldest Russell brother, took over the role of Gary’s lead trainer from his father.
Russell Sr was the only trainer in the lives of his boxing sons. However, he succumbed to Type-2 diabetes complications and a stroke. Despite his demise, the patriarch left indelible words of wisdom for his boxing family.
According to Gary, he felt the presence of his father everywhere before the match. He could feel him while in the locker room and his corner while in the boxing ring.
In his own words, he revealed that perhaps their late father’s energy is transferable, and the boxing brothers utilised it to fuel their careers.
Their father’s health had started declining the year before. In December, he underwent a severe amputation on his left foot. Regardless, Russell Sr managed to be by Russell Jr’s side in January during his fight in Atlantic City. Unfortunately, a debatable majority decision saw him losing to Mark Magsayo from the Philippines.
The next month, Russell Sr was with the family in Las Vegas for the Gary vs Viktor Postol. The match ended with a technical knockout during the final 10th round. The wheelchair-bound Russell Sr was available to guide his son from outside the ring.
This win was the most outstanding in Gary’s career and the last one his father attended in person. It was a big moment for the whole family as Russell Jr with Gary joined the US Olympic team. Additionally, his four boxing sons won national Golden Gloves titles.
Gary vs Rances
Seconds before the fight started, Gary looked up to acknowledge the presence of his father in spirit as part of the introduction. He pointed towards where his late father used to sit by the ring, guiding him during his past matches.
When the bell went, he threw sting jabs to draw immediate applause from the boxing fans. With an experience of facing minimal resistance during his earlier 15 bouts, Gary gained the advantage of two inches on his opponent.
A punch during the next round sent Gary staggering after blocking Rances from moving forward. When the opponent switched stances, Gary modified his strategy immediately.
During the rounds, Russell Jr, who’d been World Boxing Council champion for about seven years, told Gary to keep being aggressive. This led to the punch that sent Rances packing.
