28 founder and Mayver’s ambassador, Sam Wood, says that while we definitely deserve time to relax this year, it’s important to be mindful of what you and your family are eating and drinking, especially when outdoors.
“In the heat, our bodies can quickly become dehydrated and lose the essential minerals needed to regulate bodily function and temperature. So, whether you’re at a family barbecue or enjoying a picnic with friends, I’d recommend preparing recipes that are balanced, refreshing and easy to digest,” Sam says.
“Additionally, when the water content in our body reduces, exhaustion and tiredness often follows, which is why eating the right foods can mean the difference between getting a much-needed energy boost or heading to the couch for a lazy afternoon nap.”
Sam says that in order to maintain your children’s energy levels during school holiday adventures, it is vital to encourage healthy eating habits early and to be wary of classic summer treats that are high in sugar and additives.
“I know for my kids, it wouldn’t be an Aussie summer without sitting on the trampoline with an icy pole in hand. However, many convenience store-bought icy poles contain added nasties, which can have an impact on energy levels and mood,” Sam says.
“You can significantly increase the nutritional value of your icy poles by making your own at home. For a nutrient-rich and high protein treat that’ll provide you and your family with a slow burn of energy, try my Choc Peanut Ice Cream Blocks Recipe recipe which includes Mayver’s Peanut Butter.
“As well as being a delicious summer treat, this recipe doubles as a fun activity to stamp out the school holiday boredom.”
Choc Peanut Ice Cream Blocks Recipe by Sam Wood
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Freezing Time: 3 hours
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Serves 10
Ingredients
3 cups banana, frozen
2/3 cup Mayver’s smooth peanut butter
1 cup coconut milk
200g dark chocolate, broken into chunks
2 tbsp coconut oil
2 tbsp maple syrup
½ cup peanuts, roughly chopped
Method
- Add the frozen bananas, peanut butter and coconut milk into a food processor. Blend on high speed until it forms a smooth consistency. If required, add a splash more milk.
- Pour or spoon the mixture into the icy pole moulds and place an icy pole stick into each. Place in the freezer for 2 hours.
- After this time, melt the chocolate and coconut oil over a double boiler. When it’s melted, stir through the maple syrup.
- Pour the melted chocolate into a glass that is big enough to dip the icy poles into.
- Remove the icy poles from the freezer. Dip an icy pole into the chocolate to coat it, then sprinkle the peanuts over the top. Repeat with the remaining icy poles.
- Return the chocolate coated icy poles to the freezer for an hour until the chocolate is solidified.
