The Only Boy in New York is about the relationships of one recent graduate who is adrift.
Thomas (Callum Turner), not Tommy, is the son of a successful publisher (Pierce Bronson) and an artist. He is struggling to find love and his identity in the big apple.
Thomas remarks that ‘New York has lost its soul’ at a dinner party. But it is Thomas who has not found his sense of purpose or profession after his father calls his early writing attempts ‘serviceable’.
He moves into a shabby apartment on the Lower East Side where he becomes friends with his alcoholic neighbour, W.F (Jeff Bridges).
Rebuffed by his best friend, he then discovers his father is having an affair with a younger beautiful co-worker (Kate Beckinsale). Thomas becomes determined to stop their relationship which ends up in an unworkable love triangle.
I was left wanting to know more about the mysterious Johanna and some of the other characters.
Fact – The movie has the same name of a Simon & Gafunkel song.
The Only Boy in New York is a likeable albeit slow movie with an original ending.
The Only Boy in New York is currently showing in cinemas around Australia.
