
Blueback is a heart-warming tale of appreciating the oceans and fighting to save them.
During her childhood, Abby learns to dive near the local coral reef. Her mother is a passionate activist keen to keep the illegal fishers, poachers, and developers away from their coastal hometown.
Abby explores the area and befriends a wild blue groper called Blueback. She draws the wildlife and paints them in watercolour.
Later she leaves the town to study at university and work on saving the world’s coral reefs. However, her scientific expedition is cut short to return to her mother who’s had a stroke.
The film is based on Tim Winton’s best-selling novel. After writing the novel about a fictional reef, Tim found himself defending the Ningaloo from developers.
Blueback was shot at Bremer Bay in Western Australia, with the underwater shots taken at Ningaloo. It flips back and forth through time.
Blueback inspires us to take care of our environment and is a tale that needs retelling.
