From the first few moments of A Taste of Hunger, it’s not quite clear what this film appears to be. There come moments we’ve seen before in other foodie films that focus on an egotistical tyrant in the kitchen seeking impossible perfection and another Michelin star. But there’s more under the surface here, both in and out of the kitchen.
The monochromatic atmosphere and a sparse script make for tense viewing, with a few curve balls you might not expect. Despite a Hollywood ending, the story and performances by both Katrine Greis-Rosenthal and Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, as husband and wife Maggie and Carston, are captivating. Young Flora Augusta playing their daughter Chloe deserves special mention.
A Taste of Hunger opens nationally this Thursday 13 October. Check your local guides for screening times.
