2040 is an environmental documentary made by Damon Gameau. I enjoyed his first documentary ‘That Sugar Film’, and this one will introduce you to some new ideas about improving the planet.
The premise of the documentary is promising – It is written as a sentimental letter to his young daughter about what the future of the planet might be like.
Damian travels around the globe to talk to a group of experts. They discuss community-owned power grids, marine permaculture (floating seaweed), soil regeneration, self-driving cars and city environmental dashboards. The ideas are intriguing and thought-provoking.
You’ll be introduced to doughnut economics, which I found hard to understand until I read some more about it online afterwards.
I found some of the footage interesting, especially imaging what 2040 life might be like. I wasn’t a fan of the miniature people, kid’s comments or the party at the end.
There’s no real doom-and-gloom here to motive you. Although you might find some of the scenes eye-opening, like crowded cattle yards, packed shipping ports and mega-highways.
The 2040 documentary showcases some different ways to think about the future. It is ideal as a talking-point for kids to watch at school and discuss alternative solutions.
