Local charities are reporting an increase in requests for support, including food relief and financial assistance. Here are some of the places where you can ask for help.
The Foodbank Hunger Report
Released in October 2022, The Foodbank Hunger Report key statistics:
- On any given day, over half a million households in Australia are struggling to meet their food needs.
- Households with children are being hit harder than others (32% severely food insecure in the past year vs a national average of 21%) and single-parent households are the worst of all (37% severely food insecure).
- The rising cost of living is the most common explanation for why people are failing to meet their household food requirements (64% of food insecure households). Unpacking this, the cost of food and groceries is the top cause (49%), followed closely by energy (42%) and housing (33%) costs.
- Over half of food insecure households (54%) had someone in paid work.
- Nearly a third of households with mortgages (30%) have experienced food insecurity in the last year. The situation is even worse in regional areas (36% vs 27% in metro areas).
- On a typical day, 306,000 households are receiving assistance from food relief organisations.

Goodna Steet Life

Lighthouse Care
Lighthouse Care is a non-profit charity that supports people from all walks of life. Based in Loganholme and Hillcrest – helping people with emergency food relief. Lighthouse Care website
Nexus Care
A Brisbane charity helping thousands of kids, families and individuals with healthy food relief and quality care programs. Support for people experiencing hardship or food insecurity. Everton Park and Sandgate offer food parcels in Brisbane. Nexus Care website
Orange Sky Australia
Orange Sky Australia is the world’s first free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness – an idea founded in a Brisbane garage by two 20-year-old mates, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett. Orange Sky website.
Pantry Assist at Church of Christ (Annerley)
Pantry Assist provides food parcels to struggling families and individuals. Items available include cereal, lunchbox fillers, long-life milk, tin soups and fresh vegetables, fruit and bread. Food products and availability vary from week to week. A small fee is charged per item to cover costs. Where: 459 Annerley Road, Annerley. When: Tuesdays, 10:00 am-12:00 pm
Wesley Mission Queensland – Brisbane Relief Hub

Women’s Legal Service Qld
Women’s Legal Service Qld assists women with domestic violence and family law – free of charge. There are evening legal advice services and a legal advice telephone line.
