Uncle Su has just opened the largest Chinese restaurant on the Gold Coast inside The Star. You’re welcome to join Executive Chef Song Yao Su’s and feel like family at the dinner table.
You’ll find a menu packed with your favourite Chinese dishes with a modern Australian twist and lots of locally sourced seafood and produce. The menu features Cantonese style cuisine to signature Beijing and Szechuan dishes.
“Just as I grew up eating and cooking with my own family, my dishes at Uncle Su are uncomplicated and authentic, making the most of the amazing seafood and produce that Queensland has to offer,” Chef Song said. “Whether you’re relaxing in the lounge bar, gathering with loved ones in a booth or taking a seat at the kitchen counter, I’m so excited to be extending my family’s dinner table to friends, old and new.”
We decided to try the Sunday Yum Cha. We tasted an amazing range of handmade yumcha including the Uncle Su’s Six Fortunes: Steamed Prawn and Pork Dumpling with Abalone, Har Gao with Bamboo Shoots, Baby Spinach, Crab & Prawn Dumplings, Ham and Turnip Puff Pastry, Deep Fried Chicken Spring Roll and Deep-Fried Taro Dumpling.
Then we tried dim sum including Shanghai Xia Long Bao, Enoki mushroom and Vegetable Dumplings, Pork Ribs with Black Bean Sauce, Satay Cuttlefish, Steamed BBQ Pork Buns, Shrimp and Pork Stuffed Eggplant, Prawn Rice Noodle Roll wrapped with Crispy Bean Curd and Steamed Rice Noodle Roll with Vegetarian Fritter.
My dining companion enjoyed the cuttlefish and stuffed eggplant. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the prawn dishes were. These are all handmade to order each day.
Be tempted by Chef Song’s signature Peking Duck which is marinated for over 24 hours in his secret sauce, then roasted and carved at the table. Another must-try dish is the clams served in Chef’s secret XO sauce.
Our waiter said that it was his family tradition growing up to always drink Pu’Er tea with yum cha. We selected a tea from a tea cart. The dedicated tea connoisseur talked us through some of the different Chinese teas on the tea cart. You can select something like Oolong or Jasmine and four premium teas which are served as part of a traditional Chinese tea ritual (aka a ‘Kung Fu’ ritual). I recommend this if you’re looking for a unique experience – it was a lovely way to end the meal.
Uncle Su offers 5 private dining rooms seating up to 12 guests allowing for a more intimate and personal dining experience, and a semi-private room that can be booked for functions up to 36 guests.
Uncle Su takes authentic yum cha to the next level with a memorable tea experience.
Because as a wise man once said, ‘Laughter is brightest where food is best’.
