The Matchmaker by Saman Shad, debut author – Saima is a professional matchmaker for the desi community in Sydney. She knows that she is successful in pairing compatible couples. Every week she is invited to attend the resulting weddings.
Suddenly, however, her community has started turning against her and she can’t understand why?
The gossip is that she’s, too modern and focused on compatibility above all.
Soon she’s feeling the pinch and having difficulty paying her bills! She’s about to give up when a wealthy couple arrives at her door with an offer that will save her business. They want her to convince their son that he needs her services, but she must not let on that his parents have approached her.
Kal is good-looking and successful but is beginning to question his direction in life. For instance, what is the outlook for a third-culture kid? But then a woman enters his life and he begins to question his ideas on heritage, love, and life in general. Does she have the answers?
Saima, however, abandoned any hopes of love years ago. Is it too late to discover that she may have been wrong? Is the answer much closer than she realises?
Will this matchmaker recognise the perfect match?
Saman Shad has written a spicy cracker of a story with this, her debut novel. It allows the reader, who may know nothing of matchmaking in the desi culture, to experience that part of it that brings two people together. Two people who will, hopefully, get to know each other, fall in love and have a successful marriage.
It also tells of the highs and lows experienced by these third culture kids, who may have different opinions and needs to those of their parents. It is above all though a marvellous romantic comedy, and up there with the best.
A sparkling must-read. Looking forward to Saman’s next novel with great anticipation!
