Promising Young Woman is about Cassie’s attempts to understand what happened around her best friend’s tragic circumstances. Both were promising medical students until her death.
Cassie drops out of university. She is now stuck working in a café and living at home with her parents. However, she spends her nights pretending to be drunk and picking up stray men.
She has a chance encounter with an old male friend and a genuine romance develops, or is Cassie just manipulating him for her own agenda?
The film is divided into chapters, but what happened unfolds organically. You are almost lulled into thinking it may end well. However, there are plenty of shocking moments – so this isn’t for the faint hearted.
Carey Mulligan delivers a standout performance.
Promising Young Woman is an intriguing and unique take on revenge films. It’s all a little dark and twisted – just how I like it.
