The Marriage Act by John Marrs – is from the bestselling author of The One, which is now an eight-part NETFLIX series. Set in the same world as The One, The Marriage Act is a dark and complex thriller that will appeal to all book lovers of this genre.

Set in Britain in the near future, a right-wing government believes it has the answer to society’s ills.

The Sanctity of Marriage Act is introduced, which encourages and rewards those who marry, but punishes those who refuse and choose to remain single.

The narrative follows the lives of four couples, who gradually discover that their relationships are becoming impossible as the government monitors every aspect of their personal lives.

Government installations listen to every word and to every disagreement, no matter how small.

Relationship Responders are deployed to spy upon couples and families, driving most beyond despair.

Every tool the government can think of, they will use to ensure everyone will love, honour and obey.

This is a wonderfully written and thought-provoking novel. It encourages the reader to contemplate the possibility of this concept happening for real in the future.

John Marrs is a force to be reckoned with in the realm of literature.

Reminiscent of both 1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell it is a definite must-read for 2023.
