We booked our flights to Melbourne with Virgin Australia and were happy with the price.
Book Economy X
A few people recommended paying a little extra to have Economy X seating. You’ll enjoy 40% more legroom, priority boarding to skip the queue, and preferred overhead lockers.
Seat Allocation
It’s best to select your seats as soon as you get the email, so you can get your first preferences. I like to sit near the window and see the view.
Did you know that in a research poll of more than 7,500 respondents, approximately 67 per cent voted in favour of an aisle seat as their preferred seat?
Luggage Check-In
You’ll want to place the printed luggage tag on the handle on the long side of your suitcase. The machine needs to weigh your bag long ways. My bag was declared overweight when I placed it upright, even though it wasn’t.
Try to avoid getting on the plane last with too much carry-on luggage, as you might not find room for it. The overhead storage tends to be full.
I like to pack some noise-cancelling headphones, a snack in my carry-on, and something light to read like a magazine. It’s also good to keep your valuables and medication with you – just in case your luggage arrives later than you do (which happened to me once flying to Stockholm).
In-flight food
The food on interstate flights is limited and you can pay for it with a credit card. On the way down, we didn’t bother ordering anything. On the way back, I did buy some cheese and crackers and Morish savoury nibbles (almonds, cashews, macadamias, pretzels) to share.
Other options on the in-flight menu include sandwiches, wraps, chocolate and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. You might be tempted by a trio pie pack (party pie, sausage roll and quiche), ham and cheese toastie or a chicken Caesar lettuce sandwich.
Don’t forget you might like to eat a meal at the airport or bring your own food and drink.
In-flight Entertainment
You can scan a QR code to view the Virgin entertainment app, but you’ll need to be on their Wi-Fi.
Otherwise, you can download a show to watch on Netflix beforehand, so it’s ready to watch.
In-flight Amenities
If you have packed in a rush and have forgotten something, it’s nice to know that you can order a Captain’s Comfort Kit with an eye mask, ear plugs, socks, tissues, moisturizer, lip balm, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a pen.
Luggage Collection
Please do not add a ribbon to your luggage – as this can get caught in the machines. Also, don’t be a prat and stand right in front of the luggage carousel on your phone and hog the space!
If you are purchasing a new suitcase look for unique colours in July suitcases. I recommend packing a dedicated laundry bag and some colour-coded bags from Airporttag.
