Simply Lies by David Baldacci – Mickey Gibson, formerly a New Jersey detective, is now employed by a global investigation company, following her acrimonious divorce. ProEye’s employees use the latest technology to track down those, who are known to be exceedingly wealthy, but who seem bent on avoiding their debts. Mickey, now the sole carer of her two young children, has reluctantly given up her career in the police force, knowing that it can now have no place in her life.
Arlene Robinson, a colleague from ProEye, asks Mickey to inventory an old mansion, which is owned by Rutger Novak, who is known to the police as a disreputable former arms dealer. Seemingly, Novak has cheated ProEye clients out of millions of dollars in the past and now they need to find and collar him. On a thorough search of the mansion, Mickey discovers a secret room, concealing a long-decomposed body.
When the police investigation proceeds, it is found that no-one by the name of Arlene Robinson is employed by ProEye. There is also no mansion allegedly belonging to Novak. It is also discovered that the dead man is thought to be a local wealthy recluse named Daniel Pottinger.
As the two women continue to interact, their investigations into solving the mystery surrounding the death of Pottinger soon become a contest. Their personality traits are gradually revealed, especially regarding the elusive woman with no name. It appears she has no ethics or empathy, but is able to persuade anyone to believe anything!
Already up there with the crime novel greats, Baldacci has created an exceptionally intriguing relationship between the two main, female characters in this, his latest novel.
Well presented, with a skew on the norm, this fast-paced novel leads the reader on an edge-of-the-seat, roller-coaster ride that will keep them guessing until the very end.
Simply Lies is a top class must read!
