My Grandfather, The Master Detective by Masateru Konishi – There used to be a cafe called Mon Cheri at Nishi Waseda where members of the Waseda Mystery Club spent day after day bubbling over in excitement over the latest mystery novels. Now he and Kaede solve mysteries together.
As a lover of classic crime stories, it’s no surprise that twenty-seven-year-old schoolteacher Kaede encounters everyday mysteries more often than the average person. Solving them is another matter, however, and the person she always heads to for guidance is her beloved Grandfather, who, despite suffering from dementia, still retains a keen sharpness of mind. From impossible locked-room murders to confounding missing person cases, this amazing Granddaughter and Grandfather team ‘weave stories’ in master-and-apprentice fashion to get to the bottom of a wide variety of cases. All the while, an ominous dark shadow slowly closes in on Kaede, posing a much more insidious threat!
This extremely talented author has created a crime series with a difference, in which there is complete trust and fine teamwork between Grandfather and Granddaughter that can only be described as tenderness. This leads to a sharing of knowledge that allows them to solve the most difficult of crimes. It also bears the message that a person with dementia should not be dismissed as being a lesser human being. Their reasoning may be different, but can be just as effective whether solving crimes or dealing with life day to day!
A wonderful novel, and a must-read for 2026!
