We chatted with Chris Borbas from Green Beacon Brewing Co.
What motivated you to start a brewery?
Adrian and Marc (Green Beacon owners) were motivated to open a brewpub in Brisbane to offer a place where people could come and enjoy locally made beer and fresh seafood with friends and family (dogs as well).
Tell us a little bit about the space…
We have currently have a 400m2 warehouse in Teneriffe, just 2km from the Brisbane CBD. The brewing equipment is on display behind the bar, where you can sit with a beer and watch the brewers make some of the best beer in the country. We have fresh seafood and share plates, as well as daily food trucks. The brewpub is open 7 days a week, midday til late.
What’s your most popular product?
Our most popular beer would have to be Wayfarer – Tropical Pale Ale. It’s refreshing and smooth with tropical fruit flavours.
What’s unique about your beer?
We strive to have a perfect blend of flavour and session-ability with all of our beers, regardless of the style. There’s no use making a beer if you can only have one at a time.
What’s your favourite beer right now? Why?
7 Bells – Passionfruit Gose. It’s light bodied, refreshing and a little bit tart, with huge amounts of passionfruit flavour and aroma.
If you could only have one beer for the rest of your life. What is it?
Block 15 – Sticky Hands Double IPA
What’s your favorite food to eat with beer?
Japanese street food
Who would like to have a beer with?
Anthony Bourdain. It would have to be a macro lager though, because he didn’t buy into the whole “craft beer” movement. I could live with that.
What has been the highlight of your career?
Winning Champion Australian Brewery in 2017 and 2018 at the Australian International Beer Awards.
Do you have any plans for the future?
We plan to keep doing what we’re doing now, focussing on making and supplying the best beer we can.
Green Beacon is located at 26 Helen St, Teneriffe, QLD 4005
They will be participating at the upcoming Crafted Beer & Cider Festival on Saturday 6 October 2018 at Broadbeach. This year’s event features over 35 local and interstate (and an international!) breweries bringing along over 150 craft beers, ciders and ginger beers for you to sample, while listening to a full day of live music and chomping down on some delicious eats from some of South East Queensland’s finest food trucks.
