Go as A River by Shelley Read tells the story of Victoria Nash, who lives and works on her family’s farm, which is situated on the outskirts of a small town, and its river, in the wilds of Colorado.
In 1948 on a crisp autumn day, Victoria is heading into town to deliver peaches to the local store. On the journey, she meets a young, unkempt stranger, who stops her to ask the way. The choice that she makes in response will affect both of their lives in the future.
Victoria will be faced with making heartbreaking acts of courage and suffering tremendous loss. It will also, however, necessitate the formation of great strength, and a will to carry on.
From the very first page, the author’s skilled use of the written word flows throughout the narrative. Often reflectively, at other times tumultuously, it ‘goes as a river’.
Interspersed with intimate descriptions of the landscape, its changing seasons and its wildlife, she describes the lives of two very different young men and their extraordinary mothers. Mothers who both found the fortitude to carry on, made possible by their love for their sons.
An absolute pleasure and a definite must-read!
