Garfield goes back to when he first met his human owner Jon Arbuckle and Odie the dog.
The film starts with a flashback to Garfield’s childhood story and how he met and became adopted by Jon. I liked this part of the film the most.
When Garfield’s long-lost father turns up unannounced, the pair embark on an elaborate journey. There’s a kidnapping and here we meet some new characters. Along with Vic and Odie, the trio plan to rob a dairy farm.
The film is packed with slapstick humour. (Perhaps a little reminiscent of Wallace and Gromit, or Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons). I wasn’t laughing as much as I had expected.
The dialogue is pitched more towards a younger crowd of kids rather than their parents. It’s missing the innuendo humour that only adults would appreciate. The voice acting is good. Snoop Dogg makes a memorable cameo.
Many film reviewers have lamented that it’s not the same lazy and sarcastic Garfield from the original comic stripes. Personally, this didn’t bother me. Fans might like to spot the Easter Eggs scattered throughout the film.
The character Garfield was created by Jim Davis. It started life as a popular American cartoon strip in newspapers from the 1970s. Did you know it holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip?
Garfield remains a fluffy and cute character with a fun crew. The film has a simple story arc perfect for kids but needed to be shorter in duration.
Garfield is a good introduction to the character, his family, and his backstory. But I would have liked to learn more about his human owner, Jon.
Garfield has an Australian release date of 30 May 2024.
