As the cork trees are struck bare for harvest, so too are the silent tensions in the relationship of newlyweds, Helena (Vicky Luengo) and Ivan (Pol López).
About to have their first child, the architect couple leave the city to renovate the old stone farmhouse on 1,200-acre cork forest Elena inherited from her aunt.
Their renovation plans are grand, but it soon becomes clear that their views on the house and how to live on the land could not be more different. This will be the first of many tests for them to face.
Cork is captivating viewing. The tension grows consistently, and the restrained performances counter any predictability of the next turn of events. The ending is almost comical – a statement of action as well as a reflection of what the couple’s relationship has amounted to.
Cork makes its Australian premiere at the Spanish Film Festival and is now showing at participating Palace cinemas. Check your local guides for screening times.
