Avatar: The Way of Water is the follow-up film about the beautiful world of Pandora. It’s another action-packed adventure with new characters.
After danger looms, Jack Sully needs to find a new place of refuge among the sea people.
The Sully family, Jake, Neytiri, and their kids struggle to fit in with the locals but must adapt to learn new ways of living. The Na’vi race lives in harmony with the sea and its creatures.
It’s tough not to empathize with the characters. James Cameron justified the long duration: “The goal is to tell an extremely compelling story on an emotional basis, I would say the emphasis in the new film is more on character, more on story, more on relationships, more on emotion. We didn’t spend as much time on relationship and emotion in the first film as we do in the second film, and it’s a longer film, because there’s more characters to service.”
The world is amazing with spectacular animation, CGI, and special effects. The 3D is immersive.
Yes, the film could have been shorter, but it does follow each character’s story arc well. And there are lots of new characters to meet. The dialogue is frequently basic.
Perhaps the most frustrating part is that they don’t flee to safety when they can. They stay together in a pack. I was disappointed they didn’t go back to revisit the forest world.
Avatar – Way of Water is definitely one to enjoy in cinemas with a drink and plenty of snacks.
Australian release date of 14 December 2022.
