5 ways to boost the speed of your home WiFi

With internet speed now ranking as one of the top concerns for home buyers, it’s clear that we live in the age of wireless connection. Nearly everything, from streaming music and television to making video calls, now depends on a solid internet connection. If your internet has slowed down recently or you simply want to give it a boost, here are some things to try.

#1 Change router position

It might sound obvious, but this initial step can make all the difference. The nearer you are to your router, the faster your internet will generally be. Choose a central position that’s high with no surrounding obstacles. Don’t put the router in a drawer or cupboard and beware of other devices. Nearly any electrical device (including telephones, baby monitors, and even televisions) can affect the signal. Move your device away from these items and perform a quick speed test. You’ll probably notice an immediate difference.

#2 Try a wired connection

Although it’s not always possible, wired connections are invariably faster than wireless. The difference is most tangible when you’re performing network-intensive tasks like streaming movies or spinning real money pokies in Australia, which put a strain on your connection. Using Ethernet cables can be inconvenient as it shackles you to one location, but the uptick in connection speed is undeniable. If you can’t stand being wired, save your cables only for when you really need them.

#3 Turn off other WiFi devices

Even if devices like smartphones and tablets appear to be dormant, the chances are they’re performing background tasks that use WiFi. Devices will download updates, process automatic maintenance, and run background tasks using your connection without you even knowing. This can cause a massive slow down. If you need your WiFi for something like a video call or movie stream, be sure to turn off WiFi on other devices or put them into flight mode. Most smartphones and tablets have options to turn off background tasks, which can stop this problem from occurring.

#4 Clear out your computer

The router isn’t always to blame for slow internet speeds. If your computer is overloaded with files, cookies, and extensive internet history archives, it might be time for a clear out. All this stored up data can have a big effect on connection speeds. Better still, run a virus/malware check. There are lots of nefarious programs that can find their way onto your computer without you even noticing. These will slow down nearly every aspect of the machine, including the internet.

#5 Purchase a WiFi booster

If all else fails, boosters are a healthy investment that can dramatically increase the speed of your internet connection. They work by amplifying your existing WiFi signal and are simple to use. They usually work with any provider, too, so you can keep the same booster even if you switch your internet. Boosters are especially useful if you live in a large house and experience slow down when you’re far away from the router.
