The Sister’s Gift by Barbara Hannay is the heartwarming new family drama by the bestselling author of Meet Me in Venice.
Twenty-four years previously a well-meaning young woman, Freya, bestowed upon her sister, Pearl, the gift of motherhood. Unfortunately, rather than bringing them together, it caused a rift in their relationship and ended one with the man Freya was to marry. Also, to Freya’s dismay, Pearl always insisted that Freya keep the circumstances of her daughter’s birth a secret.
In the present day Freya is divorced, childless and now homeless, after losing her house in a fire. All she has left are a few belongings and her little dog, Won Ton. Distraught, she accepts a job offered by her niece, Billie, managing the family restaurant on the picturesque Magnetic Island off the coast of Queensland. Pearl and her husband are taking a well-earned holiday.
Billie has recently returned from Greece, her heart broken by one of the locals, and her own secret. When her parents leave for their holiday, she turns to Freya for support.
Involved in a court case on the mainland, Billie meets and is attracted to Detective Dan Dexter, who has a young daughter.
Freya’s former lover, Seb, a successful artist, re-enters her life as the restaurant’s new chef. They find they still have romantic feelings for each other, but the past still comes between.
Will the three women grasp the truth at last, and what will be the consequences?
This moving novel is greatly enhanced by the tropical setting of Magnetic Island and all the more so since the author calls the place home.
A story of family ties and the sacrifices made for each other. Love, romance, forgiveness, this wonderful novel has it all in abundance. It is a feel-good, and sometimes heart-wrenching, story of love, loss and redemption.
Its characters are endearing and the story realistic. It raises questions on surrogacy and problems that this selfless act could create in the future for all concerned, especially if the truth is withheld.
If you love romance, this is a must read for 2020.
