If you relish those comical duos who are so in sync with each other that it feels like real life, you’ll love this New Zealand comic export. From the opening scene of The Breaker Upperers, you’re thrown into a world of smart cons and hilarious dupes.
These two multi-talented female entrepreneurs – Jen (Jackie Van Beek) and Mel (Madeleine Sami) – dream and conspire ways to break up their client’s relationships. Their highly effective M.O. of posing as police officers helps one boyfriend escape his girlfriend’s emotional suffocation, and will hilariously comes back to bite them.
Mel has the softer side to dealing with clients and before too long she befriends one and starts a physical relationship with another – a huge no-no in Jen’s book of rules: ‘no emotional attachments with clients. It’s a reminder to Mel that their sometimes immoral methods can hurt. Her realisation forms a crack in her friendship with Jen and ultimately their business venture.
As a sole trader, Jen is lost at sea and a solution to remedying the rift comes in the form of an unwitting victim of one of their previous schemes. It brings a resolution full of laughs.
Highly recommended.
