Star Crossed by Minnie Darke is her debut, romcom novel of the riotous knock on effects after a young journalist tweaks her magazine’s horoscopes in the hope of winning a former friend’s heart.
Justine Carmichael, Sagittarius, ‘copy runner’ for the Alexandria Park Star, an upmarket monthly magazine, unexpectedly runs into an old friend from her home town.
Nick Jordan, Aquarius, aspiring actor and avid reader/believer of horoscopes, has also moved to the city.
Unfortunately for Justine, Nick already has a girlfriend, the glamorous Laura Mitchell, Capricorn, and advertising model for Chance wines.
When Nick moves into an apartment in the block opposite Justine’s, their former close friendship resumes, and Justine becomes Nick’s acting coach.
Hoping to steer Nick’s life decisions in her favour, Justine surreptitiously makes slight alterations to ‘Aquarius’ in Leo Thornbury’s astrology column before the magazine goes to print.
In doing so she unwittingly changes the lives of others while only trying to alter those of her and Nick.
In this wonderfully comedic romp, Minnie has created some marvellous, quirky characters, including the staff working at the magazine and those who perform in the theatre. Then, there are others going about their daily business whose lives are also in need of a nudge from the stars. All are impeccably written with wit, joy and a mischievous sense of humour.
Whether or not you care a jot about astrology I guarantee you will love this book. A truly heart-warming page-turner.
