You might like to take a trip on board the historic Mary Valley Rattler for a memorable day out for all the family.
The Mary Valley Rattler operates both steam and diesel passenger trains as well as two types of railmotors from Gympie Station to the town of Amamoor. The heritage carriages have been recently restored.
The Rattler’s 46km round trip starts at Gympie and after crossing over the Mary River. It chugs its way rhythmically around an abundance of curves, across bridges and numerous gentle hills.
The trains will travel to Amamoor and through the lush landscape to one of Mary Valley’s most attractive villages, Amamoor. Here passengers disembark and get to see the steam engine being turned around on the historic turntable. The train returns to Gympie.
You’ll enjoy views of one of Australia’s richest and most picturesque food regions – Mary Valley.
Mary Valley Rattler General Manager, Linda Barry, said “The Mary Valley is one of the most fertile farm areas in Australia – you can grow just about everything – from meat and dairy to exotic fruits, vegetables and herbs.”
“The rich agricultural scene was one of the main reasons for the establishment of the railway over 100 years ago, and we are thrilled to be able to maintain that connection today.
“The RM76 railmotor dates back to the 1920s. [It] was used locally on the Brooloo line to Gympie, providing a daily link to the town for shopping, the transportation of goods and produce, and a means for children to get to school.”
The Rusty Rails Café
Breakfast, lunch and snacks are available at the station’s Rusty Rails Café. The menu is designed to please all members of the family. The Rusty Rails Café accepts credit cards and is a non-smoking venue.
School Holidays
Special family services run on Mary Valley Rattler for school holidays.
The trains are perfect for family groups, and the school holiday services would be geared specifically for families.
“The great thing about the Rattler trains is that they resonate so strongly with all ages,” said Michael Green. “We will have plenty of interactive activities for children… and activities to keep them involved throughout the journey.”
There is a range of different experiences, and it is ideal for groups.
