Here’s my review of Lynda Rennick’s chunky crochet start kit by Homelea Lass.
The Chunky Crochet Starter Kit includes everything you need to complete your first project. The box contained one 300g skein of Homelea Bliss and a 25mm bamboo crochet hook. You’ll be given access to online crochet patterns and helpful information.
When I received the kit, beautifully packaged by Lynda, I opened it and was amazed by the olive Homelea Bliss yarn. It was much thicker than any wool I have ever used, so, as promised, wonderfully chunky, and such a glorious colour. Although the 25mm bamboo crochet hook had a lovely light feel to it, I found it rather daunting, as the largest hook I’ve used to date is a 7mm.
The bamboo crochet hooks have been selected because they feel so marvellous to use. The bamboo material means the hook is light and the double indents on the hook makes the hook fit snugly in the hand.
I decided to make the Grounded Cowl as it looked just the thing for my winter wardrobe.
I found it necessary to have a few practice runs to get myself used to the hook and the chunky wool. I found the instruction video that Lynda had kindly allowed me to view – a great help in getting the correct hold on the hook and the wool to maintain an even tension. She makes it look so wonderfully easy and soon I got into a rhythm and, hopefully, did justice to Lynda’s stylish pattern. To make it a little wider, as Lynda suggested if required, I made an extra row.
The finished article took me about 30 minutes to make. It measures approximately 1m around and is approximately 12cm wide. I think it looks and feels fabulous!
I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Australian grown wool, which, made into yarn, is light, soft, warm and strong. I look forward to using the yarn in the future and making one of Lynda’s amazing chunky blankets.
Homelea Bliss is a super chunky yarn that is made from soft merino wool and feels amazing! The wool is grown between NSW and Victoria, and processed between NSW and Victoria as well. The yarn is 100% grown and processed right here in Australia (which is hard to find). The yarn is made by plying (twisting) 27 individual pieces of yarn together in multiples of three. This method adds durability to the soft wool and gives it amazing stitch definition.
The yarn is perfect for making big chunky blankets, scarfs, cowls and cushion covers.
Homelea Bliss yarn comes in 12 gorgeous colours – natural, oatmeal, dusky rose (soft pink), mustard yellow, celery (light green), olive (dark green), steel blue (soft blue), navy blue, mushroom (mauve), donkey (soft brown), light grey and black.
There are 60m (66yds) of yarn in each skein and it’s best to give it the wool-washing-combo of cold, gentle hand wash and lie flat to dry.
You can purchase the Chunky Starter Kit from the Homelea Lass website.

Lynda is currently in the process of putting together videos showing how to make each of the patterns, making them even easier to make! Every single part of the making is recorded, and she includes helpful hints as well. Soon they will be available on the Homelea Lass website.

Looks great – did you use the yarn spinner?

Hi Gay, Dee says “As I don’t have a yarn spinner, I used the old-fashioned method – husband holds skein taut while I wind the ball”
