A Man and His Pride by Luke Rutledge – is his debut novel and is set in Brisbane during Australia’s
2017 same-sex plebiscite.
Sean Preston, now in his twenties, has never been one to be loud and proud regarding his sexuality. In
fact, when his latest relationship comes to a mortifying end, he pledges never to become seriously
involved ever again! Instead, he hits the booze, goes for one-night stands and begins a relentless gym
routine.
Quite honestly, Sean’s life isn’t working out at all! Working as an online troll moderator is testing his
sanity, his best friend, a former girlfriend, still begrudges his coming out, and his mother appears to
blame him for a past tragedy that ripped their family asunder!!
It is, however, his unexpected relationship with a nursing home resident in her eighties that forces his
identity crisis to the limit!
Through this friendship, however, he meets William and a bond is struck between them despite William’s
inexperience and reluctance to join the gay dating scene. Sean offers to help but discovers that William
has his own surprisingly enlightening advice to give in return. It seems that Sean’s emotional scars need
to heal before he can begin to live his life without remorse.
This is a brilliant, perceptive, and moving debut novel that sheds light upon the highs and lows of same-sex relationships. Witty, moving, and often heart-breaking, the narrative follows the journey made to
understand and celebrate individuality, and realize that you’re not alone on the road to enlightenment.
A great read for everyone, not only those who embrace diversity, but also those who lack understanding. It will, I’m sure, greatly enhance your outlook on life.
