Moving Into a New Home: The First-Week Checklist

Moving into a new home is an exciting moment, as you get ready to begin a new chapter in your life. Living in a new area means new neighbours, different cafes and restaurants to visit and a whole new area to explore. However, before you can start getting to know your new locale, you need to ensure that the move to your new home goes as smoothly as possible. 

So you’ve packed all of your belongings, got the keys to your new property and had an electrician and plumber in the Sunshine Coast check over your new home before moving in. While you might think that your work is done, there are plenty of minor but very important tasks that need to be tidied away. In the stress of moving homes, many homeowners overlook some critical tasks that can make the first few weeks in your new home a little more challenging.

To make sure that you don’t forget anything when you’re moving into a new home, be sure to follow our first-week checklist below. 

Start Unpacking

Whether you recruit friends and family to help, or you go it alone, the quicker you start unpacking your things, the sooner your new house will feel like a home. The best approach is to organise one room at a time, starting with the bedroom, kitchen and living room. Be strategic and take your time so that you find the best location for your belongings in your new home and set it up right from the beginning. 

Change Your Locks

While not everyone will feel the need to change the locks when they move into a new home, it is a wise move. You just don’t know how many copies of the key to your home could be out there. From the previous owners to their friends and family, tradespeople, real estate agents, cleaners, and builders there are plenty of people who could have a copy of your key so for your own peace of mind, it’s best to change the locks.

Familiarise Yourself With The Property

Taking the time to get to know your new home when you move, will help you to feel more in control of your new property. Practicalities like knowing where the fuse board and the shut-off valve for your water supply are important in case there are any issues. However, you should also figure out what the different switches do and where the electrical outlets are, which can help determine the layout of your furniture.

Sort Out TV and Internet

If you are moving your existing TV and/or internet service to the new address, you should organise this as soon as possible. On the other hand, if you are new to the area, it is worth looking into what packages are available locally to make sure you get the best deal possible. Having an internet connection is crucial for so many things nowadays and you won’t want to be without a connection for too long. 

Test The Smoke Alarms

While you would hope that the smoke alarms are in perfect working order, it’s always a good idea to check for yourself. Most smoke alarms have a small test button that when held down will signify whether the alarms are working or not. Knowing that your smoke alarm is working will allow you to relax and sleep easy in your new home.

Once you have completed all of the tasks on the checklist above, you can start to relax and start settling into your new home. As you start to become more familiar with the layout and feel of your new property and you fill it with your belongings, it will quickly start to truly feel like home.
